Has Cloud Computing Jumped the Shark?

The above phrase was the title of an article I read from PC World. I have to admit I laughed out loud. With all the coverage on Cloud Computing in the news, magazines and in the software world we could very much declare the Cloud has jumped the shark. I think however, that “we ain’t seen nothin’ yet” for 3 reasons.

1. This is only the beginning – The move from desktop to Cloud is really just getting started. Keep in mind the largest software company in the world Microsft (oops, or is it Apple) released their FIRST version of Office that’s entirely Cloud based. Microsoft is just getting warmed up. Honestly, once they get moving in a direction and commit their energy to it…there’s no stopping them.

2. We underestimate the Cloud – The Cloud is not simply hosted e-mail and document storage. If that’s what Cloud Computing is then we’re well already there. The essence of Cloud Computing is complete interoperability between applications. If data in the Cloud can be accessed and processed by multiple applications at a speed far greater than we have on our normal desktop I’m going to chalk that up in the win column.
