IBM Edge: Live Event Summary

MSPAlliance is here at the IBM Edge event in Las Vegas and we will be giving you realtime highlights and updates from the conference.

Day One

Big Data
IBM is clearly backing the concept of “big data” and touting the need for IT professionals and managed service providers to make better use of the “trails of data” we leave behind us everyday.

IBM customers, like Centerline Digital, are speaking about the IT management and related storage challenges related with big data.

It’s no longer about storage, it’s about data management.

IBM is definitely pushing open standards for data and cloud management. This is consistent with their public participation in open stack and their obvious desire to in the center of any big data discussions and engagements. It’s no longer just about the hardware.

Are educational institutions doing enough to advance the training of data science?

Day Two
It’s day two here at IBM and we’ve been having a lot of discussions with IBM folks, as well as the sponsors. It is curious how focused the sponsors are on the concept of addressing the “big data” issue. This is clearly not just a focus for IBM but also for their close partners.

Some of the discussions with these partners are also blending into talks of engaging MSPs. Right now, the MSP Summit is underway and I will be curious to see what types of MSPs are represented here.

The Next Generation MSP
I’m listening to Rodney Foreman talk about IBM’s vision for how managed service providers will be engaging with the company and its latest acquisition of SoftLayer. Mr. Foreman states that just like Netflix was a disruptive business model for Blockbuster, IBM partners like Arrow and their cloud program ArrowSphere, will be disruptive to the existing managed services delivery models by enabling them to deliver cloud brokerage offerings.

Cloud isn’t the only message today as IBM is positioning itself as a central player to MSPs. Of particular interest is the message of data analysis that is palpable here. I am curious what types of MSPs will be embracing of the big data analytics model.
