Interview with Eastwind Networks

Eastwind Networks recently sponsored the MSPWorld 2015 Conference, where they introduced their breach detection technology to MSPs from across the world. We decided to ask Eastwind Networks about their views on managed services and the state of cybersecurity today.

Who is Eastwind Networks and what is it that you provide?

Eastwind Networks gives MSPs the ability to differentiate their security offering without adding complexity. Our product is a cloud based solution that monitors a customer’s network for anomalous behavior, allowing businesses to catch threats before any damage is done. Unlike firewalls and SIEMs that only secure the perimeter, Eastwind detects intruders after a breach, but before an attack. MSPs thus have the chance to remediate the problem before data is stolen.

How does Eastwind view breach detection differently from other technology vendors?

We address the epidemic of hacking at the network level, adding an essential layer of protection beyond the perimeter. One in five SMBs are hacked every year, and 60 percent of those affected go out of business. Hackers succeed because they encounter no resistance beyond the perimeter. Eastwind provides that layer of resistance, allowing MSPs to catch hackers beyond the perimeter, but before they steal data.

Once past the perimeter, hackers typically dwell in the network for six months before committing a breach. Eastwind’s sensors shine a floodlight on their behavior. Our Breach Detection Cloud™analyzes your network traffic metadata, uses machine learning to understand what’s normal and alerts you only when behavior is truly anomalous, enabling you to remediate problems before they affect the business.

What types of service providers do you typically see using your technology?

MSPs looking to provide enterprise grade security for their SMB clients, ensuring customers’ resources and data are safe beyond the perimeter.

What are some of the more serious network breach attacks MSPs need to be aware of and protect against?

The sheer volume of network attacks, and channels through which they can be executed, is the biggest thing to be aware of. Between malware, social engineering and insider attacks, malicious parties find countless ways in. They take their time finding the most valuable assets and remain undetected for an alarming amount of time. It currently takes businesses an average of 170 days —nearly two financial quarters—to detect a malicious cyber crime. Insider attacks take 259 days to find. If successful, a targeted attack will cost an SMB as much as $84,000, increasing the odds of potential insolvency down the road.

For MSPs, it’s less about looking for specific breaches than protecting against any and all breaches. Improved security is the #1 reason businesses seek out managed services, according to a recent CompTIA MSP Trends study. By finding potential breaches before they happen, MSPs can literally save the farm.
