MasterCard breach hits UK Morgan Stanley customers

(MSPAlliance) – Monday, May 1, 2006 – Morgan Stanley customers in the UK are the latest to be affected from a major security breach that has resulted in thousands of stolen MasterCard details.  At least 2,000 MasterCard holders have had credit card accounts compromised due to the breach, according to silicon.com.

MasterCard notified card issuers of the breach last week and also began calling affected customers to cancel cards and open new accounts.  Some Visa cardholders have also reported recent card cancellations due to fraud, but it is as yet unconfirmed whether these cancellations are connected to the MasterCard breach.

There is speculation that the UK breach may be connected to a massive breach in the United States earlier this month that resulted in hundreds of thousands of compromised card details and PIN numbers.  MasterCard is not providing details on the breach and has refused comment other than to say it took immediate action upon discovering the breach.
