Updating content delivery networks

(MSPAlliance) – Monday, May 1, 2006 – Not since Gutenberg invented the printing press has there been an explosion in content as there now is on the Internet.  Blogs, podcasts, RSS feeds and Web sites have shifted the production and consumption of media from text-driven to graphic-driven.  Traditional IT strategies stemming from servers, storage, telecommunications and cybersecurity need to be reworked to keep up with new business strategies that allow people to write blogs, download podcasts and view video feeds on demand.

Content delivery networks should also be updated to reflect the new media technologies.  CDNs connect hundreds of servers and storage devices over the Internet, storing graphics-heavy content and loading content in closest proximity to the end-user.  The end result is a better, faster online experience.

Content has traditionally meant text, but graphics have replaced text as the primary means of online communication.  Delivery systems have been largely perfected, but the key is now to reach as many people as possible.  Businesses should look for CDNs and security services as part of bundled services from IT providers.
